The Delaware Revolution are a founding member of the Premier League of the United States.
History[]
The Delaware Revolution is an American professional soccer club based in the city of Newark, Delaware, and competes in Premier League of the United States (PLUS).
The Revolution became PLUS's second team upon creation of the league in 2011. The team plays their home matches at Delaware Stadium a multi-purpose stadium located on the campus of the University of Delaware and is coached by former Welsh international Garth Hywel.
Drive for Expansion[]
Despite being one of the ten largest metropolitan regions in the country and a top-five media market, the Delaware Valley area was not represented when Major League Soccer formed in 1996 and Premier League of the United States began operations in late 2011. The first effort to bring soccer to the Delaware[1]Valley commenced in 2001, when a group of investors attempted to bring an MLS franchise to Trenton, NJ. The centerpiece of their efforts was a $31 million soccer-specific stadium to be built across the street from the Sun Bank Center and with access to the under-construction NJ Transit RiverLINE. The proposed Trenton MLS team was to have been named "Union FC." The club's efforts where thwarted by then MetroStars and future Philadelphia Union general manager Nick Sakiewicz, as Trenton was within The MLS's MetroStars 75-mile "ring" of exclusivity.
Five years later, plans were in place to construct a 20,000-capacity stadium on the campus of Rowan University that would have been shared with an MLS expansion club. Ultimately, $100 million in state bonds to fund the stadium and various other improvements on the Rowan campus were dropped by New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine and the proposal fell through.
In 2007, Sons of Liberty supporter group formed and began advocating for Major League Soccer to award the Delaware Valley an expansion team. They are credited with convincing the league that the area already had an established fan base for soccer.
While Major League Soccer declined to add Philadelphia as its sixteenth team, the Premier League of the United States awarded the city of Newark, Delaware it's second franchise. The finalization of the club is the result of a $47 million package approved by New Castle County politicians and Delaware governor, Jack Markell, that includes the cost of rental of the University of Delaware's Delaware Stadium, planning of building a soccer exclusive stadium between Wilmington and Newark and a major urban renewal project.
Inaugural Season[]
In the 2011 PLUS SuperDraft the Revolution selected with it's first pick forward Timmy Cahill an Irish National with the 6th overall pick. Subsequent picks have brought highly touted prospects such as Mid Fielder Fabian Sonnenberg, Goaltender Alden Clarke and Defender Devin White.
